This 2023 report by researcher Jace Wolfe, Ph.D., CCC-A provides an overview of the impact of childhood hearing loss with a focus on four areas:

  1. the impact of childhood hearing loss on brain development;
  2. the impact of childhood hearing loss on listening, spoken language, and literacy development;
  3. the benefits of early access to hearing aids for children born with hearing loss; and
  4. the financial benefits of providing proactive, auditory-based intervention for children born with hearing loss.  In 2023, the societal cost of undertreated childhood hearing loss ranges from $1.8 million to $4.5 million.
